Teachers from Paichai High School have decided to visit Gwangju Jeil High School to offer an apology on behalf of the students involved in the so-called Starbucks cheering chant controversy.
According to educational circles, Paichai High School staff members are scheduled to visit Gwangju Jeil High School this morning, July 1, to convey their apologies.
This comes two days after the controversy first emerged.
The student athletes who chanted the slogans, along with their parents, are also discussing a visit to offer their own apologies.
Previously, some members of the Paichai High School baseball team chanted, "Let's go, let's go, let's go to Starbucks," toward the opposing dugout during a match against Gwangju Jeil High School at the 81st Blue Dragon National High School Baseball Championship and Weekend League Tournament held recently at Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul.
One of the students also shouted, "Tank Day."
In an internal school investigation, the students explained that one team member had modified an existing cheer by adding the word "Starbucks," and the others followed along impulsively.
Although Paichai High School posted an apology on social media and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education has launched an investigation, the repercussions continue.
Three organizations related to the May 18 Democratization Movement and the May 18 Memorial Foundation have issued statements of criticism, and teachers' unions have also called for measures to address historical distortion and far-right subculture trends.
