A man in his 20s who has been extorting money from drivers in Daejeon through staged accidents has been apprehended by police. However, the method captured on CCTV shows a technique different from the typical insurance fraud tactics we are familiar with.
While walking down an alleyway talking on his phone, the man would suddenly extend his arm toward a passing vehicle to intentionally collide with it, causing the phone he was holding to fall to the ground. He would then show the driver a phone that was already broken and demand repair costs instead of going through insurance.
It was revealed that the man used this same method to stage 55 accidents between September of last year and April of this year, pocketing approximately 13 million won.
Why did the man target phone repair costs instead of insurance payouts?
