Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on June 29 (local time) that some of the country's frozen overseas assets will be released.
According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, President Pezeshkian met with Shobeiri Zanjani, a high-ranking Shia cleric, on this day and stated, "Following the scheduled procedures, $6 billion (approximately 9.3 trillion won) out of the $12 billion (approximately 18.5 trillion won) in Iranian funds held in Qatar will be released and returned to the country."
President Pezeshkian referred to the recent situation in the Middle East and praised the determination of the Iranian people, who have stood firm against the pressure and threats of their enemies.
He emphasized, "In the recent war, the enemies martyred our great leadership, cabinet members, commanders, elites, and even students, but the people, the military, and the government stood firmly united to defend the nation and did not allow the enemies' goals to be realized."
Previously, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on June 19 that the United States, having signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a ceasefire with Iran, is in discussions with Qatar on a plan to allow the $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds to be used for the purchase of humanitarian goods.
Sources familiar with the matter stated that this plan is being pursued as one of the initial financial incentives following the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran.
