The Chinese government announced that it will provide 100 million yuan (approximately 22.7 billion won) in emergency humanitarian aid to Venezuela following the recent earthquake.
During a regular press briefing on Monday (June 29), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated, "China is closely monitoring the earthquake damage in Venezuela," and explained that the decision was made to provide an additional 100 million yuan in emergency relief supplies, following previous cash assistance.
Venezuela was struck by powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude on June 24.
The death toll from the disaster has surpassed 1,450, with more than 3,000 people reported injured.
"The relief supplies will be used for disaster recovery and reconstruction and will be transported to Venezuela as soon as possible," said spokesperson Guo. "China is willing to provide further assistance through the Chinese government and the Red Cross Society of China, depending on the evolving situation in Venezuela."
Guo added that China is supporting rescue and recovery operations by providing satellite imagery of the affected areas to Venezuela. He also noted that Chinese companies operating in the country and local overseas Chinese communities are voluntarily providing construction equipment and medical supplies, and have organized rescue teams to participate in search and rescue efforts.
Chinese President Xi Jinping previously sent a message of condolence to Venezuela on June 26, expressing his intention to provide assistance for relief and recovery efforts.
