Jeong Han-mil has secured his first career victory on the Korea Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA) Tour at the Gunsan CC Open, two years after narrowly missing out on the trophy at the same event.
On the final day of the Gunsan CC Open (total prize purse of 1.114 billion KRW) held at the Gunsan Country Club Tournament Course (par 72) in North Jeolla Province on June 28, Jeong carded an eagle, four birdies, and three bogeys for a 3-under-par 69.
With a final score of 17-under-par 271, he finished four strokes ahead of Kim Seong-hyeon (13-under-par 275) to savor his emotional first win in his 164th career start.
Jeong, who debuted on the KPGA Tour in 2017, came agonizingly close to victory at the Gunsan CC Open held at the same venue in July 2024.
At that time, he was tied for the lead until the 15th hole but fell behind in the final three holes, settling for a runner-up finish by two strokes.
Since then, Jeong had struggled to find opportunities for a win.
He managed only one top-10 finish last year and had not placed in the top 10 at all this season.
However, Jeong put those frustrations from two years ago behind him on this day.
Entering the final round with a three-stroke lead over the group tied for second, Jeong experienced an unsteady flow, alternating between birdies and bogeys.
He grabbed his first birdie on the 2nd hole (par 5) but suffered a bogey after a three-putt on the 5th hole (par 3).
He recovered with a 0.9-meter birdie putt on the 6th hole (par 4), but another bogey on the 8th hole (par 3) prevented him from extending his lead over the chasing pack.
Jeong added birdies on the 9th hole (par 5), the final hole of the front nine, and the 13th hole (par 3), but recorded another bogey on the 14th hole (par 4).
The turning point came on the 15th hole (par 4).
Jeong sealed the victory with a spectacular eagle shot.
He holed out his second shot from 116 meters away in the fairway.
Afterward, Jeong parred the remaining holes to confirm his first career win.
Kim Tae-hoon, who shaved four strokes off his score on the day, finished third at 11-under-par 277, while amateur Yoo Min-hyuk placed fourth at 9-under-par 279.
Jang Yu-bin, who was tied for 6th entering the final round and aiming for a third consecutive victory, struggled with a 3-over-par 75 to finish tied for 14th at 6-under-par 282.
The total prize purse for this tournament is determined by combining revenue from gallery tickets, food and beverage sales, and tournament merchandise sales from the first to the third rounds.
The prize money was finalized on June 27, with the winner receiving 222.818 million KRW.
Having concluded the first half of the season, the KPGA Tour will begin its second-half schedule with the Donga Membership Group Open, which kicks off on August 20.
