We have breaking news. The U.S. military has resumed airstrikes against Iran, labeling Iran's attack on a vessel passing through the Strait of Hormuz as a violation of the ceasefire. We go to Washington for more details.

Correspondent Lee Hanseok, please start by updating us on the situation regarding the U.S. airstrikes.

A short while ago, U.S. Central Command, which oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East, announced on social media that it has resumed airstrikes against Iran.

In a statement, Central Command said that U.S. aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar sites, in response to Iran's attack on the Everly using a one-way attack drone on the 25th (local time).

Earlier, Iran attacked the Singapore-flagged container ship Everly as it attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz early yesterday morning.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran warned that safe passage is only guaranteed when following routes designated by Iran, and that they would respond to any vessels that do not comply.

Immediately following the attack, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided to temporarily suspend its plan to withdraw ships and crew from the Strait of Hormuz just one day after it was announced.

These U.S. airstrikes come 12 days after the memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end hostilities was reached on the 14th.

So, the U.S. resumed airstrikes almost immediately after President Trump's reaction regarding Iran's ceasefire violation?

[Reporter]

U.S. President Trump stated on his social media early this morning (June 27) that Iran had launched at least four attack drones at ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a clearly foolish violation of the ceasefire agreement.

Later, when asked by reporters at the White House about the U.S. response, he said they would find out soon, without mentioning specific timing or methods of retaliation.

While there were observations that the U.S. would approach the situation cautiously rather than taking immediate military action, given that the memorandum of understanding to end hostilities is in effect, the U.S. military defied expectations and launched attacks on Iran a short while ago.

The U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding stipulates an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts. As the U.S. has resumed military action, the upcoming working-level negotiations between the U.S. and Iran scheduled for next week are unlikely to proceed smoothly.
