Prosecutors have requested a life sentence for a man in his 20s who assaulted a former classmate with a blunt weapon, sexually molested the victim's younger sister, and set fire to their home.

The Jeju District Prosecutors' Office requested life imprisonment today for the 21-year-old suspect, identified as A, who was indicted on charges including arson of an inhabited building and violations of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes.

A is accused of visiting the home of his former classmate, B, in the early hours of January and attempting to murder the victim by striking them in the head with a blunt weapon he had brought with him.

He is also charged with threatening B's younger sister with a weapon and sexually molesting her.

A did not stop there; he also used a gas stove to set fire to the jumper he was wearing, causing damage to part of the house.

The victims' family returned home at the time and reported the incident to 119, and it was confirmed that the victims did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

During the trial, A admitted to all the charges but claimed he was in a state of mental and physical weakness.

In his final statement, A said, "I am sorry to the victims I injured through assault," adding, "I have lived my life blaming my family environment, but if I had pulled myself together and lived properly, this would not have happened."

The sentencing hearing for A is scheduled to be held this coming July.
