The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has launched an investigation following the deaths of a mother and son in Eumseong-gun, North Chungcheong Province, who took their own lives after falling victim to a voice phishing scam involving tens of millions of won.

In a media briefing today (June 23), the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "To ensure a more professional and swift investigation, the case will be transferred to the voice phishing investigation unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Metropolitan Investigation Division."

On the morning of June 20, a woman in her 50s, identified as A, and her son in his 20s, B, were found dead in an apartment in Eumseong-gun.

A suicide note found at the scene reportedly contained a message stating, "We have been struggling due to the voice phishing damage."

Police believe that B, who had been suffering from financial hardship, decided to end his life along with his mother after losing 50 million won to the voice phishing scam.

The case was initially reported to the Seoul Geumcheon Police Station on June 6, but the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency decided to have the Metropolitan Investigation Division handle the case to expedite the probe.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "It has been confirmed that the entire amount of the stolen funds was transferred to an unidentified electronic wallet via an overseas cryptocurrency exchange, and we are currently tracking the movement of these funds."
