Yu Jae-seok delivered a stellar performance during a quiz segment.
On the June 21 broadcast of SBS's 'Running Man,' a special "Running Man Summer Soccer-vacation" race was held in anticipation of the World Cup.
During the episode, the members earned a free meal after successfully completing a penalty shootout. They drew attention by feasting on pork belly, pork jowl, spicy cold noodles (bibimmyeon), and parboiled octopus.
The final training session after the meal was a memory-strengthening game. The members had to memorize a given sentence and pass it down in a relay. The final runner then had to answer a question based on it. For every incorrect answer, one more person would be added to the penalty list. In particular, the penalty for the day was revealed to be a full-body plunge into a valley stream, which instantly ignited the members' competitive spirits.
HAHA declared that if anyone slacked off and got penalized, he would use his penalty transfer pass. Meanwhile, Jee Seokjin brought up Ji Ye-eun, who had previously backed out of the Big Swing ride, saying, "If there is only one penalty recipient, Ye-eun has to go in."
In response, Ji Ye-eun firmly replied, "If Sechan oppa or Jihyo unnie gets picked, I can go in for them. But I won't do it for anyone else. When I asked for a 'black knight' (savior) earlier, nobody helped me."
Yu Jae-seok carried the team during the relay quiz. Even surrounded by the show's notoriously clueless members (the "kkangkkaengies"), he managed to guess the correct answers using only minor clues, leaving everyone in awe.
Seeing this, the members openly shifted into "Jae-seok, do it for us" mode. After memorizing and explaining a sentence, Kim Jong-kook brought laughs by saying, "The answer to the question is Napoleon, and Jae-seok hyung will definitely know where Napoleon was exiled to for the last time."
Almost as if they had quickly changed the question on the spot, the production team asked for the final place of Napoleon's exile. The members immediately cornered the production crew, protesting that they had changed the question. The crew honestly admitted, "We changed the question because we thought Yu Jae-seok would know it."
Amid high expectations, Yu Jae-seok actually got the answer right. Stunned, Yang Sechan and HAHA looked at him in wonder, asking, "Wait, when did you even learn that? Have you always been interested in Napoleon?" HAHA went on to praise him, saying, "If he had focused on studying, he would have gone to Seoul National University."
The final penalty recipients of the day were chosen through a random draw. Coincidentally, Yang Sechan and HAHA, who were dressed in the colors of the South Korean national flag (Taegeuk), were selected.
The two, who had already faced playful glares from the other members for underperforming in the final training session, ended up being the ones to take the plunge. They drew attention by diving into the water while cheering for the South Korean national soccer team.
