A heatwave advisory has been issued for Seoul for the first time this year.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) announced that as of 2:00 p.m. today (June 18), a heatwave advisory would take effect for the southeastern and southwestern districts of Seoul; the cities of Pocheon, Goyang, Namyangju, Osan, Anseong, and Gwangju in Gyeonggi Province; and Ganghwa County in Incheon.

Heatwave advisories were already in effect for Gyeongsan, Yecheon, and Gunwi in North Gyeongsang Province, as well as Hanam and Yeoju in Gyeonggi Province, starting from 11:00 a.m. today.

A heatwave advisory is issued when the perceived temperature is expected to exceed 33°C (91°F) for two or more consecutive days.

As of 2:00 p.m., temperatures soared to 34.9°C (95°F) in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, and 34.4°C (94°F) in Yeoju.

Gwangjin District in Seoul also recorded a temperature of 33.5°C (92°F).

With strong sunlight, temperatures may rise further throughout the afternoon.

The KMA forecasts that the daytime heat will continue until tomorrow. Rain is expected to begin on Jeju Island tomorrow morning, spreading across the country from tomorrow night through the day after tomorrow, Saturday, which is expected to ease the intensity of the heat.
