A man in his 20s has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for brutally murdering a victim after being released from prison, driven by a delusion that the victim had sexually assaulted his family.

The Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch, presided over by Judge Kim Ji-hyun, sentenced the 27-year-old defendant, identified as A, to 30 years in prison today (June 16) during the sentencing trial for charges including murder, special trespassing, special injury, and confinement resulting in injury.

According to the indictment, A murdered 45-year-old B at an apartment in Taejang-dong, Wonju, at approximately 6:39 p.m. on January 16.

A broke into the victim's home while B was out, assaulted and threatened B's 71-year-old mother, C, and held her captive. When B returned home, A attacked the victim with a weapon, committing the crime.

Investigations revealed that while serving a five-year prison sentence for a previous sex offense, A became obsessed with the delusion that B had sexually assaulted his family, leading him to plan the crime after his release.

A even hired a private investigator to locate the victim's residence and disguised himself as a fruit delivery worker to gain entry into the home.

He then inflicted injuries on C that required approximately five weeks of medical treatment and held her captive for about two hours while waiting for B to return.

The court acknowledged that A admitted to the crime and reported himself to the police as mitigating factors, but ultimately determined that the nature of the crime was extremely grave.

The court pointed out, "The defendant continues to claim that the victim was at fault, despite there being no evidence to support such a claim. By repeating these assertions, he has defamed the deceased and caused severe psychological harm to the bereaved family."

The court further explained the sentencing, stating, "It is difficult to fathom the physical and mental suffering the victims must have endured, and the method of the crime was so brutal that it warrants strong condemnation. Various test results indicate that the defendant suffers from an antisocial personality disorder, and this tendency appears to have intensified following his previous criminal convictions."

The court added, "The defendant has not been forgiven by the victims' side, has made no effort to make amends, and the bereaved family is calling for a severe punishment."

Deeming the risk of recidivism to be high, the court accepted the prosecution's request for an electronic monitoring anklet, ordering A to wear the device for 20 years following his release from prison.
