South Korea is establishing a cooperative framework with Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada to take the lead in international standards for artificial intelligence (AI).

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on June 12 that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on "Pre-standardization Cooperation for AI" with the national standards bodies of the four countries at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore on June 11.

Pre-standardization refers to activities that define technical concepts, testing methods, and conformity assessment elements before full-scale standard development begins.

This MOU was pursued based on a shared consensus that an international cooperative framework must be established in advance to respond to the rapid development and proliferation of AI technology.

The five countries, including South Korea, plan to hold regular joint workshops and expert seminars to share best practices in AI standardization and conformity assessment, and to collaborate on the publication of white papers, technical reports, and guidelines.

They also agreed to carry out joint standardization pilot projects, focusing on key AI application fields such as manufacturing and healthcare, and to join forces to ensure that the standards developed through these efforts lead to international standardization discussions.

Kim Dae-ja, Administrator of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, stated, "In a situation where competition over AI technology and standards centered on the U.S. and China is intensifying, it is significant that we have built an international cooperative framework to voice diverse perspectives on AI standardization." She added, "We will expand cooperation with our partners and actively support our companies' global expansion by linking the achievements of M.AX (Manufacturing AI Transformation) to standardization."
