A man in his 30s who followed women on the street to look for a target and attempted to sexually assault a woman in her 20s has been sentenced to prison.

According to the legal community today (November 6), the 1st Criminal Division of the Busan District Court Western Branch (Presiding Judge Na Won-shik) sentenced a man in his 30s, surnamed A, to four years in prison on charges of rape resulting in injury.

A was put on trial for choking and severely beating a woman in her 20s, surnamed B, in front of the common entrance of a residential building in Busan at around 12:26 AM on July 12, and attempting to sexually assault her.

Investigations showed that A had trailed five women walking alone that day one after another to search for a target.

Spotting B, A approached her by pretending to ask for directions and followed her for about 400 meters to a secluded residential area. As B attempted to enter the passcode for the building's common entrance, A choked her from behind and repeatedly struck her in the face with his fists and knees as she resisted.

The crime was thwarted after a resident who witnessed the scene shouted.

The court stated, "This crime is a so-called ' motiveless crime' targeting random individuals, and it is a serious offense that causes great social anxiety as anyone can become a victim and it is difficult to cope with sudden attacks."

The court added in its sentencing explanation that the defendant's culpability is heavy and highly blameworthy, and that the victim has suffered considerable mental and physical pain, including receiving psychiatric treatment, and has petitioned for a strict punishment.
