Gyeonggi Province announced on November 6 that it is stepping up quarantine measures, including travel restrictions, to curb the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI).
The move comes as the risk of virus infiltration has increased following AI outbreaks at a local layer chicken farm and among wild bird carcasses in the province.
Gyeonggi Province is culling 90,000 chickens at a layer farm in Sinseo-myeon, Yeoncheon-gun, where highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N9) was detected on November 4, while carrying out follow-up disinfection measures such as treating contaminated items.
Additionally, travel restrictions, precision testing, and intensive disinfection are currently underway for 17 farms holding 813,000 chickens within a 10-kilometer radius of the affected farm.
The province also decided to increase disinfection and surveillance centering on high-risk areas, such as 21 migratory bird habitats, poultry-dense regions, and large-scale layer farms.
It plans to manage the implementation of on-farm biosecurity by utilizing 150 disinfection vehicles and 244 dedicated officers assigned to poultry farms.
To this end, Gyeonggi Province is holding an emergency quarantine countermeasure inspection meeting on November 6, chaired by Son Im-sung, Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs 2, with the participation of vice-heads of 18 cities and counties in the province.
"Livestock quarantine is an important livelihood task that not only prevents damage to farms but also ensures a stable supply of livestock products like eggs and protects grocery prices for our residents," Vice Governor Son said.
