A man in his 60s who had been wearing an electronic tracking anklet due to a history of stalking crimes murdered his former romantic partner as soon as his location tracking period expired.
The Seoul Eunpyeong Police Station arrested the man in his 60s, identified as A, at around 8:00 a.m. today (Nov. 5) at a multi-family housing unit in Bulgwang-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, catching him at the scene on murder charges.
The suspect, A, is currently unconscious and has been transported to a hospital.
A is accused of murdering a woman in her 70s, identified as B, who was a former romantic partner.
The police received a missing person report regarding victim B at around 6:40 a.m. today, and dispatched officers to A's residence based on mobile phone location data and past reporting history.
Upon entering the home, police discovered B dead inside and rushed an unconscious A to the hospital.
Previously, the Seoul Mapo Police Station received a stalking report from B on July 18 and applied for an arrest warrant for A on charges including violations of the Stalking Punishment Act on July 20.
However, as the prosecution office (the prosecution at the time) did not request the arrest warrant, the police instead applied for provisional measures with the court.
Consequently, A was held in a detention center from July 23 to August 22, and wore an electronic location-tracking device from his release until October 22.
However, just about two weeks after the location-tracking measures via the electronic device ended, B was found dead.
The police plan to investigate the exact motive and circumstances behind the crime once A finishes receiving medical treatment.
