Police plan to apply attempted murder charges and seek an arrest warrant for a woman in her 50s who allegedly swung a weapon at a psychiatrist at Sinchon Severance Hospital.
The Seoul Seodaemun Police Station announced today (November 5) that it will apply for an arrest warrant for the woman in her 50s, identified as A, to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors Office.
A is accused of using a weapon she was carrying in the consultation room on the fifth floor of Sinchon Severance Hospital at around 4:35 PM yesterday, injuring the face and hands of a psychiatry professor.
The doctor sustained a laceration about 5 centimeters long, was moved to the emergency room for treatment, and was confirmed not to be in life-threatening condition.
Hospital staff subdued A immediately after the crime, and police dispatched following a report apprehended her at around 4:42 PM.
Initially, police arrested A on charges of special assault. However, based on statements indicating that she brought a kitchen knife from home in a shopping bag, police concluded that she had the intent to kill at the time of the crime and decided to apply attempted murder charges.
During police questioning regarding her motive, A reportedly made incoherent statements, stating, "I tried to go to another hospital, but the Severance Hospital doctor conspired with other hospitals to prevent me from getting treatment, which made me angry."
Police plan to verify the truth of A's statements while also investigating whether she has a history of receiving treatment at Severance Hospital in the past.
