▲ Lawmakers of the Democratic Party of Korea walk out as the People Power Party begins a filibuster against an amendment to the National Assembly Act during the third plenary session of the July extraordinary parliamentary session held at the National Assembly on July 31.
The People Power Party strongly criticized the Democratic Party of Korea for adopting the so-called "Distorted Indictment" special counsel bill as its party platform and deciding to pass it at a plenary session as early as tomorrow (November 5), calling the administration "irreplaceable and beyond salvation."
The party also geared up for a full-scale response, warning that if the special counsel bill is introduced to tomorrow's plenary session, it will launch a filibuster (lawful obstruction of parliamentary proceedings through unlimited debate) against all bills introduced that day.
Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sig wrote on Facebook today (November 4), "The Supreme Court must first revoke the bail of former Institute for Democracy Senior Vice President Kim Yong, President Lee's closest confidant, in countering the 'Lee Jae-myung Perfect Crime Special Counsel Bill.'" He noted, "The implication of Kim Yong's trial is in some aspects greater than the trials where President Lee himself is the Defendant. This is because it is a trial proving the fact that Daejang-dong development profits served as a 'reservoir of illegal political funds' flowing into President Lee's primary campaign."
He also urged that the final Supreme Court ruling on Kim be delivered immediately, saying, "If Kim Yong confesses the whole truth, the 'Pandora's box' of President Lee's presidential election funds could be opened, making silencing Kim Yong the utmost priority from the regime's perspective. That is why this regime frames this case as a 'distorted indictment' and seeks to pressure the Supreme Court to deliver an acquittal."
Senior Spokesperson Park Chung-kwon stated in a commentary, "The Distorted Indictment special counsel is nothing more and nothing less than a cobbled-together 'fly-by-night scheme,' riddled with contradictions from its justification and very starting point." He added, "All citizens will stand until the end against the unconstitutional legislative attempt by the Democratic Party, acting as a royal guard, to place one man—the president—above the law."
Senior Floor Spokesperson Choi Eun-seok remarked in a commentary, "Far from looking after people's livelihoods and delivering administrative achievements, the ruling party responsible for state affairs is once again clinging to a special counsel to 'erase President Lee Jae-myung's own crimes.'" He pointed out, "One cannot help but ask whether this is a special counsel to uncover facts or to alter facts. The scale of the special counsel team—totaling 309 people for up to 200 days—is also astounding. It is a waste of taxpayers' money and national power."
Five-term lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun emphasized on Facebook, "The Democratic Party says it will introduce the existing bill to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and delete provisions regarding the withdrawal of indictments in the bill subcommittee, but the framework of investigating the investigative agencies that indicted the president and his associates remains unchanged. Attempting to alleviate judicial burdens through power is precisely the path hastening the regime's own downfall."
Five-term lawmaker Na Kyung-won also condemned the move on Facebook, calling it "the worst legislative overreach in constitutional history and a blatant attempt to erase President Lee's criminal record." She stated, "They are reducing even the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea into a 'crime laundromat' for a single president. The Democratic Party must immediately withdraw the special counsel bill."
Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon also sarcastically wrote on Facebook, "If you're going to walk around without pants anyway, why go through the trouble of picking lackeys instead of just appointing Lee Jae-myung himself as the special counsel? Those who pass this bill are the 'enemies of the democratic republic.'"
