▲ Overview of Bucheon City's Urban Planning
Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, is pushing to attract a dome stadium to the Bucheon Stadium area while developing an artificial intelligence (AI) and content-focused compact city at the former Media Culture Complex site in Sang-dong.
Bucheon City held a municipal briefing today (Nov. 3) and unveiled a vision to foster these two locations, alongside the Bucheon Daejang Urban High-Tech Industrial Complex, as the city's three major growth axes.
First, the city is actively pursuing the attraction of a medium-sized dome stadium with a capacity of around 30,000 seats at Bucheon Stadium, targeting completion by 2034.
Ahead of the government's call for proposals for a "sports and performance complex dome stadium site," the city formed a dedicated task force (TF) last month. Leveraging its strengths, which include a transport network centered around a five-way transfer station and hosting three major international cultural festivals, Bucheon plans to submit a proposal this month to be selected as a candidate site within Gyeonggi Province.
In addition, the city plans to build a compact city integrating content and AI industries with residential, commercial, and business functions at the former Media Culture Complex site in Sang-dong.
The total project cost is estimated at 6.93 trillion won. Following the official announcement of the urban management plan changes in December, the city aims to sign a land sales contract in the first half of next year, break ground in 2028, and complete the project by 2032.
To enhance the effectiveness of the development project, an expert-led TF has devised development plans, and detailed project plans are currently under consultation with private developers.
Furthermore, the city aims to promote balanced development between new towns and old downtown areas by supplying 32,000 households by 2032 across five regions, including the Daejang and Yeokgok public housing districts and the former military base in Ojeong.
The city plans to establish Daejang New Town as a growth hub in the western region and develop the Yeokgok district into a pleasant residential complex in harmony with the old downtown to ensure housing stability for citizens.
Kim Woo-yong, Director of Urban Affairs at Bucheon City, said, "We will pool our administrative capabilities to create an urban development model where the new and old downtowns and generations coexist and prosper," adding, "We will achieve balanced development without bias or marginalization to foster a pleasant urban environment that citizens can feel in their daily lives."
