Cheong Wa Dae has convened an emergency meeting regarding an incident in which personal data, including dates of birth and passport numbers, of the presidential delegation—including President Lee Jae-myung and First Lady Kim Hye-kyung—was leaked. Stating that it views the incident with utmost gravity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested an investigation by relevant agencies, including the police, and has begun looking into how the leak occurred.

On Tuesday morning (November 3), Cheong Wa Dae held an emergency meeting chaired by Presidential Chief of Staff Lim Gwang-hyeon regarding the leak of personal data belonging to the presidential delegation.

Defining the incident as a serious matter, Chief of Staff Lim said that the circumstances of the leak and whether actual damage occurred must be thoroughly investigated, and that the management responsibilities of the relevant agencies must be clearly determined.

He also ordered a comprehensive review of the security management system for presidential overseas trips to prevent any recurrence, calling for the preparation of effective countermeasures.

An official from Cheong Wa Dae said that the file uploaded to the website appeared to be in a template used by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it views the incident as a leak rather than hacking, and has begun looking into the background and circumstances behind it.

[Park Doo-soon / Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs: "Immediately upon confirming the leak, we requested an investigation and inquiry from relevant agencies, and we are currently conducting an investigation in cooperation with relevant organizations, including the National Police Agency, to determine how the leak occurred."]

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it is carrying out measures to reissue passports for all individuals whose personal information was leaked, including the presidential couple.

Earlier in June, a file containing the dates of birth and passport numbers of 168 individuals, including President Lee, the first lady, and senior government officials, was uploaded to a paid website that scans for malware. It was reportedly left neglected for five months, as the government remained unaware of the issue until recently.
