President Lee Jae-myung urged urgent countermeasures today (November 3), stating, "Unlike in the past, as information delivery systems have become directly faster, agitation through fake news is becoming a very effective tool."
In his opening remarks at a Cabinet meeting he presided over at the Blue House on this day, President Lee made these remarks, saying, "Society is becoming excessively polarized, and the middle ground is gradually disappearing," pointing to such fake news as the backdrop behind the trend.
President Lee pointed out, "Fabricating and systematically disseminating false information as a means to gain unfair economic profits, trafficking in clicks, or spreading false information for political purposes to cause social chaos has become far too commonplace."
He then emphasized, "Because the social damage goes far beyond the level of individual issues and is too severe, a strong response is necessary."
Meanwhile, President Lee said, "The public currently has many concerns regarding the so-called separation of investigative powers and changes to the judicial system. To dispel these concerns, the role of inspection and oversight must be strict," adding, "There is deep concern over whether crimes exploiting power or status, financial crimes, and others are being properly investigated and punished."
He continued, "For the public to trust that South Korean society is fair, transparent, and rational, the role of inspection must be rigorous," urging, "While there may be difficulties in organizational restructuring, I hope you demonstrate that [the judicial system] is functioning properly so that the public does not worry about judicial reform."
