High school seniors preparing for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), which is just around the corner on November 19, are searching for rimless glasses.
With about two weeks left until the exam, an increasing number of high school seniors are visiting optical shops, and smart glasses are reportedly the reason.
Students who normally wear thick plastic frames are trying to switch to rimless or metal frames.
This is due to concerns that wearing regular glasses at the test venue might lead proctors to mistake them for smart glasses, resulting in prolonged inspections or disputes.
Some test-takers are even considering wearing contact lenses.
Proctors who have to inspect glasses are also expressing concerns over the burden.
In a survey conducted by the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union of 2,716 middle and high school teachers nationwide, 64.4 percent of respondents expressed concern over potential complaints and disputes arising if regular glasses are mistaken for smart glasses.
Previously, the Ministry of Education announced plans to assign one dedicated staff member to each test venue starting with this year's CSAT to determine whether glasses are smart glasses.
The ministry also considered introducing radio wave detectors to supplement visual inspections by proctors, but it is expected to be difficult to apply them to this year's CSAT due to varying environments and surrounding conditions at each test site.
