A fire broke out at the No. 2 plant of Korea Zinc's Onsan Smelter in Onsan-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, at around 10:41 a.m. today (November 2).
Upon receiving reports of heavy smoke billowing around the factory, firefighting authorities deployed some 30 pieces of equipment and around 70 personnel, bringing the major flames under control at around 11:20 a.m.
However, a secondary fire broke out in another facility within the plant at around 1:00 p.m., prompting a Level 1 emergency response, which was lifted about 50 minutes later.
Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the fire is understood to have started in a factory duct.
In particular, as synthetic resin-based fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) equipment burned, a large amount of thick black smoke was generated and spread across the Onsan Industrial Complex.
Fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause of the fire and the scale of the damage once the fire is fully extinguished.
