Farmers who cultivated green chives for the upcoming kimchi-making season have decided to plow their fields under, urging measures to address falling prices and other difficulties.

According to the Jangheung County Green Chive Research Association on Monday, farmers will dispose of their cultivated chives at the source in Anyang-myeon, Jangheung County, on Tuesday morning.

The fields were originally scheduled to be harvested after November 7, following the transplantation of seedlings on September 23, adhering to the usual harvest schedule of 45 to 60 days after planting.

However, frequent rain has caused the chives to grow rapidly before their bulbs could thicken, prompting farmers to rush shipments.

Waiting until the kimchi-making season would cause them to exceed the length limit of 27 cm or less required by wholesale markets.

Due to the overgrowth, shipment volumes have increased, and wholesale prices have formed starting from 250 won per bundle.

Considering that 4 to 5 bundles grow per pyeong (approx. 3.3 square meters), farmers stated that they are facing losses of about 5,000 won out of the production cost of approximately 6,000 won per pyeong.

The farmers requested field inspections to investigate the extent of the damage and the causes of abnormal growth, support for discarding the crops at the source, and the establishment of measures to compensate for production costs and regulate shipments and supply.
