The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that First Vice Minister Park Yoon-joo and Japanese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Takehiro Funakoshi will hold the 17th South Korea-Japan Vice-Ministerial Strategic Dialogue in Japan on the afternoon of November 2.
This marks the second strategic dialogue between the two nations under the Lee Jae-myung administration, following the previous meeting held in November of last year.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that during this strategic dialogue, the two sides "plan to broadly exchange views on a wide range of pending issues, including bilateral relations as well as regional and global affairs."
The two sides are expected to discuss coordinating the schedule for the next bilateral summit to sustain the summit diplomacy that has taken root as "shuttle diplomacy," as well as measures to address North Korea's nuclear and missile development.
They are also anticipated to reaffirm the importance of cooperation and solidarity between South Korea and Japan, as like-minded countries in Northeast Asia, amid growing uncertainties in the global landscape.
With shifting variables in Northeast Asian dynamics ahead of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, both sides are expected to focus on exchanging views and building consensus to promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
Discussions regarding cooperation in industrial supply chains and people-to-people exchanges amid the global economic security environment may also be placed on the agenda.
During last year's strategic dialogue in Seoul, both sides positively assessed the momentum behind restoring bilateral shuttle diplomacy and agreed that cooperation between the two nations has become increasingly vital.
They also previously agreed to continue coordination to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and diplomacy while upholding the principle of denuclearization of the peninsula.
