▲ Suspects placing psychotropic drugs into the victim's coffee while keeping watch near the entrance
A group of individuals in their 60s and 70s has been forwarded to the prosecution for allegedly slipping psychotropic drugs into an opponent's coffee at a golf course to impair their judgment, subsequently extorting 75 million won through a rigged golf match.
The Seoul Namdaemun Police Station announced today that they had forwarded Mr. B, in his 60s, into custody on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act (psychotropic drugs) and fraud, while forwarding accomplices Mr. A, in his 70s, and Mr. C, in his 60s, without detention the day before yesterday (October 30).
According to the investigation, the suspects visited a golf course in Gyeonggi Province with the victim on July 30 and made them drink coffee mixed with psychotropic drugs.
They are accused of manipulating the outcome of the betting game against the victim and swindling 75 million won sent via wire transfer.
Investigations revealed that the group built trust by intentionally losing betting golf matches to the victim prior to the crime.
On the day of the crime, before the round began, they slipped pre-prepared drugs into the coffee while the victim went to the restroom.
With impaired cognitive and motor functions, the victim continued to play 36 holes, after which the group demanded payment at a restaurant after the round, stating, "You lost the bet, so send the money."
It was found that the suspects meticulously carried out the crime by dividing roles.
Mr. A lured the victim and prepared the drugs in advance, while Mr. B brewed the spiked beverage, had the victim drink it, and managed and distributed the received funds.
Mr. C acted as a lookout guarding the entrance while the drug was being mixed and played a decoy role to set the mood.
Police concluded that the symptoms were caused by external factors based on findings that psychotropic substances were detected in the victim's urine and hair, and that no such drugs were found in the victim's prescription history.
CCTV footage from the golf course also captured scenes of the group spiking the coffee, keeping watch, and handing over the beverage.
Police noted that this case shows how narcotics crimes have infiltrated everyday spaces for leisure and sports, urging citizens to report any suspected use of narcotics to the nearest police station.
