The Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 22 has handed down a not guilty verdict in the first trial for People Power Party lawmaker Kim Ki-hyun, who was indicted on charges of violating the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, while sentencing Rep. Kim's spouse to a fine of 5 million won.
Rep. Kim and his spouse were put on trial on charges of handing over a luxury clutch bag valued at 2.67 million won to Kim Keon-hee in March 2023 as a token of appreciation for support during the People Power Party's leadership election.
The court stated that while the constituent elements of violating the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act were met regarding Rep. Kim's spouse, there was no objective evidence or testimony to acknowledge Rep. Kim's conspiracy in the act.
