The special counsel team led by Lee Tae-han, which is investigating the ballot paper shortage incident during the June 3 local elections, has launched additional raids and searches after uncovering allegations of equipment supply corruption amounting to around 14 billion won involving an employee of the National Election Commission (NEC).

Starting at 9:10 a.m. today (October 30), the special counsel team executed search and seizure warrants at the NEC and the residences of two current and former NEC employees to secure materials related to the supply contracts.

The search involved 17 personnel, including two dispatched prosecutors and five forensic investigators.

The special counsel team uncovered circumstances indicating that the relevant NEC employee processed expensive machinery used for elections as having passed performance evaluations despite confirming that more than half of the equipment fell short of the required passing standards, thereby allowing equipment worth approximately 14 billion won to be fully supplied.

It was learned that charges including occupational breach of trust were stated in the search and seizure warrants.

The special counsel team stated that based on the analysis of the seized materials, it will uncover the substantive truth regarding allegations of lax operation within the NEC and strictly hold those responsible accountable.
