As the Chinese Communist Party massively purges high-ranking military officials ahead of next year's party congress, the official newspaper of the Chinese military has published an editorial emphasizing "obedience" to the party, stepping up internal solidarity.
In a commentary published on page 2 of today's edition, the PLA Daily emphasized, "The entire military must deeply implement 'Xi Jinping's ideology on party building' and 'Xi Jinping's thinking on strengthening the military,' deeply comprehend the decisive significance of the 'Two Establishes,' and achieve the 'Two Safeguards,'" adding, "We must implement the system of ultimate responsibility resting with the chairman of the Central Military Commission and resolutely obey the commands of the Party Central Committee, the Central Military Commission, and Chairman Xi."
The "Two Establishes" means to "establish the core position of General Secretary Xi Jinping in the Party Central Committee and the party as a whole, and the guiding role of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era," while the "Two Safeguards" means to "safeguard the core position of General Secretary Xi Jinping in the Party Central Committee and the party as a whole, as well as the authority and centralized, unified leadership of the Party Central Committee with General Secretary Xi Jinping at its core."
These serve as slogans of loyalty to General Secretary Xi.
The commentary came after the conclusion the previous day of the Fifth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (20th 5th Plenary Session), which confirmed the stripping of party membership from high-ranking military officials, including former Central Military Commission Vice Chairman Zhang Youxia, the military's No. 2 figure, and former Central Military Commission Joint Staff Department Chief Liu Zhenli.
The newspaper linked the keyword of the 20th 5th Plenary Session, "fully and strictly governing the party," to "fully and strictly governing the military," and echoed General Secretary Xi Jinping's achievements specified in the plenary session communique, such as "resolving abnormal trends and stubborn illnesses that had not been eradicated for a long time" and "eliminating severe risks that existed within the party, the state, and the military."
The newspaper further demanded, "Without the slightest wavering, we must uphold and strengthen the party's absolute leadership over the military, grasp the fundamental issues of obeying party commands and political loyalty, and ensure that our military can always be a heroic unit that the party and the people can completely trust."
