President Lee Jae-myung pledged to strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance today (October 29), referring to the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War as "a history of blood alliance that reminds us who stood by our side in the Republic of Korea's most difficult moment."

President Lee made the remarks in a written commemorative address delivered at the 76th anniversary commemoration and memorial ceremony for the Battle of Chosin Reservoir, held at Peace Square of the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, saying, "We remember the heroes of Chosin Reservoir who threw their whole bodies into the fight 76 years ago for freedom and peace."

President Lee's commemorative address was read on site by Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kwon Oh-eul.

President Lee stated, "Even in the bitter cold of minus 40°C (-40°F), where weapons and equipment froze, they broke through the enemy's multi-layered encirclement with indomitable fighting spirit," assessing that "the time they endured and the path they opened with their lives gave birth to the miracle of the Hungnam Evacuation operation."

He added, "The new lives that rose from the blood, sweat, and tears of heroes built today's Republic of Korea," noting, "As President of the Republic of Korea, gathering the hearts of our people, I offer my sincere gratitude."

President Lee said, "The values of freedom and peace that we defended together have grown into the foundation of deep friendship and trust," and stated, "Each and every South Korean and U.S. service member present here today is living proof of that."

He continued, "The dedication of the heroes will serve as a solid pillar of support for the South Korea-U.S. alliance, and the Republic of Korea will never forget their noble sacrifice," promising, "Using the values of freedom and peace defended by the heroes as a foundation, we will further firmly strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance and fulfill our responsibility and role as a member of the international community."
