The main contingent of the South Korean delegation participating in the 4th Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar has departed for Senegal, the battleground for the event.
The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) announced on the 29th that "a main group of 14 people, including athletes from judo, swimming, and wushu, as well as headquarters officials, left for Dakar, Senegal, via Incheon International Airport at 11:40 p.m. yesterday."
The upcoming event, the first international multi-sport competition to be held on the African continent, will take place from the 31st to November 13 across Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly in Senegal.
South Korea is sending a total delegation of 41 athletes across 12 sports, including swimming, archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, breaking, fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, and wushu.
Beginning with the badminton national team, which departed earlier on the 27th, the remaining athletes will sequentially join the local site according to their competition schedules through November 9.
The KSOC plans to support the delegation with accommodation, meals, and vehicles, while concentrating heavily on safety management, such as conducting heat-related illness prevention education and establishing an emergency response system.
Chef de Mission Yoo Yeon-seong (President of the Korea Corporate Badminton Federation) stated, "I hope this becomes a precious opportunity for our youth athletes to grow on the international stage," adding, "We will provide support with safety as our top priority."
