Police plan to request arrest warrants for two men suspected of abandoning a body in a residential area in Guro-gu, Seoul.
The Seoul Guro Police Station announced that it had emergency arrested and conducted initial interrogations of the two suspects on charges of abandoning a corpse the previous day.
During police questioning, the two men stated that they "did not know it was a corpse."
According to police, suspect A, a man in his 60s, and suspect B, a man in his 80s—who face charges of abandoning a corpse and instigating the abandonment of a corpse, respectively—admitted to the act of disposal during police questioning.
However, they claimed that they discarded it without knowing it was a body.
Suspect B is the landlord of a multi-family housing unit in Guro-gu.
Police found that the suspects first met as a tenant and landlord a long time ago and have known each other until recently.
According to a police forensic examination, the abandoned body is presumed to be male, but its age, nationality, time of death, and cause of death have not yet been identified.
Police plan to conduct an autopsy on the body today while reinforcing their investigation into the suspects, and intend to request arrest warrants later in the day.
Previously, around 11:00 a.m. on the 27th, a sanitation worker affiliated with the Guro-gu Office discovered the abandoned body and reported it to the police.
The body was reportedly wrapped in plastic and newspapers and had been left unattended for five days, resulting in some decomposition and desiccation, leaving it in a mummified state.
Based on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and other evidence, police tracked down the suspects and emergency arrested A and B at around 4:00 p.m. on the same day.
Suspect A is accused of abandoning the body near a garbage disposal area in a residential neighborhood in Guro-dong, Guro-gu, on the 22nd, while suspect B is accused of instigating it.
