Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryung has been reported to the police over allegations that she caused confusion among farmers by pushing forward with a nationwide farmland inspection.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency received a complaint yesterday accusing Minister Song of abuse of power, coercion, and obstruction of business.
The civic group People's Livelihood Countermeasures Committee, which filed the complaint, argued that Minister Song created anxiety among farmers by forcing the comprehensive farmland survey without gathering sufficient opinions from agricultural workers.
The civic group also raised suspicions that the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs wasted state funds by importing Brazilian eggs at high prices, and filed a complaint against Minister Song for professional malpractice.
Previously, the Ministry imported Brazilian eggs at approximately 39,000 won per tray as part of measures to diversify import sources in preparation for egg supply instability caused by outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
This price is significantly higher than eggs from the United States at 13,671 won per tray, Thailand at 14,928 won, and Denmark at 22,806 won.
Consequently, points have been raised questioning whether government budget was wasted in the process of importing Brazilian eggs.
