North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a surprise visit to Dandong, China, today (October 24).
A government official said, "I understand Chairman Kim crossed the New Yalu River Bridge this morning and traveled to Dandong in China's Liaoning Province."
A local source in Dandong said traffic control had been underway since the morning, noting, "It is difficult to go out into downtown."
The New Yalu River Bridge, which connects the largest trade hubs between North Korea and China, opened on October 15.
The bridge has been viewed as a facility symbolizing improved North Korea-China ties and the undermining of sanctions against North Korea, drawing keen attention as Chairman Kim used it to visit China for the first time.
Tomorrow also marks the 76th anniversary of China's entry into the Korean War to support North Korea by sending troops.
Therefore, Chairman Kim's visit to China is viewed as an event intended to demonstrate North Korea-China relations around this anniversary.
With U.S. President Trump attending the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, next month, dialogue between North Korea and the United States could also be on the agenda if a North Korea-China summit takes place.
