A strong magnitude 7.0 earthquake has occurred in the Tibet Autonomous Region of western China.

Citing the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the magnitude 7.0 quake struck Baqen County in Nagqu, Tibet Autonomous Region, at 10:33 PM local time on the 22nd.

Immediately following the earthquake, the CENC initially announced through automatic measurement that a quake of around magnitude 6.7 had occurred, but later finalized the magnitude at 7.0 following formal observation results.

The epicenter was located at 32.40 degrees north latitude and 93.79 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 10 km.

Xinhua reported that within a 5 km radius of the epicenter, there are three villages—Lengda, Fuqin, and Gaizaka—while areas within a 20 km radius include the townships of Gangqie and Maru.

According to the CENC's earthquake breaking news records, a total of 54 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher have occurred within a 200 km radius of the epicenter over the past five years, making this earthquake the largest in the region during that period.

As of now, the scale of casualties and property damage resulting from today's earthquake has not yet been confirmed.
