Shin Sang-hun claimed sole possession of second place on the opening day of the Genesis Championship, co-sanctioned by the Korean Professional Golfers' (KPGA) Tour and the European DP World Tour.
Playing in the first round of the tournament held today (October 22) at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club (par 71) in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, Shin shot 5-under par with six birdies and one bogey.
Shin placed second, trailing sole leader Casey Jarvis of South Africa, who finished at 6-under par.
Shin, who has secured one win on the KPGA Tour this season and leads the Genesis Grand Prix points race while ranking third in prize money, wrapped up a promising first round highlighted by a bunker-shot birdie on the first hole and a chip-in birdie on the ninth.
The tournament, which features the largest total prize pool in domestic golf with 5.3 billion won and a 900 million won winner's share, attracted a host of global stars, including PGA Tour standouts Kim Si-woo and Im Sung-jae, as well as Ryan Fox of New Zealand, this year's Open Championship winner.
Kim Si-woo, who became the first South Korean player to surpass 1 million dollars in season earnings on the PGA Tour this year, finished the first round tied for third at 4-under par, while Ryan Fox tied for eighth at 3-under par.
Im Sung-jae is tied for 33rd at even par.
