The 30th typhoon of the season, "Champi," is forecast to come closest to South Korea on the 25th, though the possibility of a direct landfall is considered low.

According to a regular briefing by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Typhoon Champi was moving northward as of 9:00 a.m. today (October 22) from waters about 710 kilometers southeast of Taipei.

It is expected to turn eastward around the 24th, make its closest approach to South Korea on the 25th, and weaken into an extratropical cyclone around the 26th.

The KMA predicted that the typhoon would have difficulty making a direct approach to the Korean mainland as sea surface temperatures around the peninsula are relatively low at 26°C (79°F) or below, and upper-level winds are restricting its northward movement.

However, as tropical moisture brought by the typhoon meets cold air over the Korean Peninsula, rain is forecast to fall starting on the night of the 23rd, centered around Jeju Island and the southern coast.

The KMA also stated, "The cold weather is expected to continue until tomorrow morning (the 23rd), with temperatures gradually rising starting from the afternoon."

Centering on the inland regions of Gangwon Province, morning lows dropped to around 0°C (32°F), leading to the observation of this autumn's first frost and first ice in Buk-Chuncheon, Gangwon Province.

Both records were six days earlier than last year.

As winds blowing over the Korean Peninsula shift from northerly to southerly components, temperatures are expected to rise overall starting this weekend on the 24th.

However, starting next week on the 27th, temperatures are expected to drop below normal levels once again.

With cold air moving south again from the north, morning lows are projected to drop to around 5°C (41°F) and daytime highs to around 15°C (59°F).

There is also a possibility that cold wave warnings or advisories may be issued for some regions.
