The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it conducted the 2026 Seoul Disaster Response Safety Korea Drill this morning (the 22nd) at Mokdong Stadium in Yangcheon-gu, with Mayor Oh Se-hoon in attendance.
This drill focused on inspecting integrated response systems among relevant organizations by simulating a cascading series of disasters, starting with ground subsidence caused by an earthquake, followed by structural collapses and electric vehicle fires.
In particular, this year's drill was conducted as a practical exercise reflecting five actual disaster cases that recently occurred in Seoul: ground subsidence in Myeongil-dong, an accident at the Seosomun Overpass demolition site, an electric bus fire at the Eunpyeong bus depot, a fire at a Sogong-dong guest house, and an underground utility tunnel fire in Seongbuk-gu.
The city explained that by reconfiguring different types of accidents into a single complex disaster scenario, it comprehensively inspected the response capabilities and inter-agency cooperation systems required during actual disasters, ranging from situation dissemination, on-site command, rescue and emergency medical services, to the restoration of urban infrastructure.
Simultaneously with the on-site drill, a discussion drill for operating the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters took place in the video conference room at Seoul City Hall.
The city checked command and cooperation systems, including disaster situation dissemination, situation assessment meetings, and the operation of 13 working-level divisions within the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.
Mayor Oh presided over the situation assessment meeting at the Mokdong Stadium site and inspected response conditions by each organization and the use of advanced rescue equipment while touring the five drill zones.
He emphasized, "This drill served as an occasion to check whether cooperative systems among relevant organizations operate effectively against complex disasters, and to review the entire process from initial disaster response to recovery and restoration, including victim support and daily life recovery that transcends language and nationality."
He added, "We will improve deficiencies identified during the drill and reflect them in the actual disaster response system to thoroughly protect the lives and daily lives of citizens, completing Seoul as a 'Special City of Quality of Life'."
