Amid mounting calls for reform, the Korea Football Association (KFA) has announced that it is tentatively preparing to hold the election for its next president on December 18.
Although the KFA limited the timeframe for the election of a new president to within the year following the resignation of former President Chung Mong-gyu on July 6, this marks the first time a specific date has been revealed.
KFA Vice President Yi Young-soo, who is serving as the acting president, appeared at the National Assembly Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee's parliamentary audit today and gave this response to lawmakers inquiring about the schedule for the next presidential election and progress on improving the association's structural issues.
"While a specific date has not been finalized, we are tentatively preparing for December 18 as the election day," Acting President Yi explained, adding, "We are consulting with the Innovation Committee, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee to expand the electoral college to around 20,000 people."
The KFA presidency is currently vacant.
After former President Chung, who led the KFA for some 13 years and 5 months, expressed his intention to step down through a statement in May and stepped down in July, the association has been carrying out institutional improvement work to elect a new leader.
Accordingly, the association is overhauling the composition of the electoral college and voting procedures, but the election of the next chief has been somewhat delayed as the relevant regulations must be revised beforehand.
"Revisions to the articles of association with the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism must precede," Acting President Yi explained, noting, "It must also be linked with the statutes of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), so we are currently undergoing a consultation process."
He added, "We are currently receiving a lot of criticism regarding the KFA's administrative issues," and expressed, "It is my hope that a new president will be elected to spearhead renewal and innovation."
