A complaint has been filed with the Major Crime Investigation Agency against Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae, who has sparked controversy over her remarks regarding the firefighting budget.
The Citizens' Coalition for People's Livelihood, a conservative civic group, filed a complaint against Governor Choo with the Major Crime Investigation Agency today (the 19th) on charges of abuse of authority, obstruction of business, and defamation.
Governor Choo sparked controversy over firefighting-related remarks during a parliamentary audit of Gyeonggi Province by the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee on the 13th, where she mentioned local government financial issues and budgets related to national firefighting officials.
On the 17th, she visited the mortuary of the late Fire Inspector Kim Jin-seok, who died in the line of duty during a factory fire in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, to pay her respects and expressed an apology, but the controversy continued.
In the complaint, the civic group argued that an insincere apology constitutes defamation that severely damages the pride of firefighting officials.
They also urged for swift and thorough investigations to hold her strictly accountable.
