Released on September 30, Chiikawa The Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island had previously hovered around the No. 2 spot, suppressed by the momentum of Assassins, but demonstrated late-stage power starting in its third week to conquer the weekend box office. Given the current trend, surpassing the 2 million mark within this week is all but certain.
Chiikawa The Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island is an animated film depicting a suspicious subjugation mission in which Chiikawa and friends set off for an uncharted island lured by the sweet temptation of a hundredfold reward, only to uncover a hidden secret there. It is based on the Siren arc, a popular long-form episode of Chiikawa serialized by Japanese illustrator Nagano.
