Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on the 17th, local time, that a meeting between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia could take place during the G20 summit held in the United States.
However, he added that the U.S. and Russia have not yet confirmed this and that the meeting could potentially be held at a different location.
Speaking to reporters in a WhatsApp chat room for the press, President Zelenskyy said, "There is a possibility that a meeting could be held in the U.S. during the G20 summit," but noted, "However, it has not been confirmed yet by Russia or the U.S. It could also take place in a European country."
He further added, "There is also a possibility that the talks could be held in one of the Middle Eastern countries. The U.S. has continually mentioned the United Arab Emirates or Saudi Arabia."
President Zelenskyy stated that the Ukrainian negotiating team spoke with U.S. officials on the 16th, but did not disclose specific details.
He also emphasized that amidst strained relations caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Europe likewise needs to establish independent channels of dialogue with Russia.
U.S. President Donald Trump has refused to impose stronger sanctions on Russia regarding the war, which has continued for over four years, and President Zelenskyy has criticized President Trump for lifting sanctions on Russian diesel exports.
Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy stated that speed limits imposed on the services provided by satellite communication company Starlink have prevented the Ukrainian military from using interceptors to respond to Russian drone attacks.
"Today, our interceptor drones are not working due to the speed limit issue," he said.
President Zelenskyy explained that he was informed the speed restriction was due to technical issues, but after testing Starlink within European Union territory, no such issues appeared there.
President Trump stated on the 16th regarding the disruption of Ukraine's Starlink access, which hindered military operations against Russia, that he does not believe either he or Elon Musk bears responsibility.
It has been reported that the recent reduction in service provision has led to cutoffs in communication with the Ukrainian military command and significant drops in internet speeds.
