▲ VANK launches campaign to promote Arirang
The cyber diplomatic delegation VANK is launching a campaign to promote Arirang, South Korea's representative intangible cultural heritage, to the global community in celebration of World Intangible Cultural Heritage Day.
VANK stated that it organized the campaign to counter recent attempts in China to distort the history and origin of Arirang, and to inform the international community that Arirang is a unique traditional song of the Korean people that has been sung in Korea across generations.
The organization named the initiative the "Arirang from Korea" hashtag campaign.
China designated Arirang as its national-level intangible heritage in 2011, and recently sparked controversy by describing the origin of Arirang on a signboard in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province, as "songs of migrants who crossed from the mainland to the Korean Peninsula after the establishment of the Han commanderies."
In response, VANK designated "#ArirangfromKorea," which clearly indicates that the origin of Arirang is Korea, as the official hashtag and has launched a massive promotional movement.
Conducted as a citizen-participatory project, this initiative involves uploading digital posters and card news to social media along with the corresponding hashtag.
