A complaint urging an investigation into allegations that independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon covered up a police investigation into his daughter's "fabricated credentials" while serving as Minister of Justice has been transferred to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "The complaint regarding the alleged cover-up of the investigation involving Lawmaker Han Dong-hoon was transferred and received by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency yesterday (October 15)."
It added, "We plan to assign the case after thoroughly reviewing its contents."
Previously, multiple civic groups filed a complaint with the National Office of Investigation under the National Police Agency against Lawmaker Han and prosecutors suspected of involvement in the investigation cover-up, citing charges of abuse of authority and dereliction of duty.
Earlier, the Anti-Corruption and Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency received a complaint regarding the "fabricated credentials" of Lawmaker Han's daughter, who was serving as Minister of Justice in May 2022, and closed the case in December of the following year by deciding not to refer it to prosecutors.
The allegations involve Lawmaker Han's daughter commissioning a ghostwritten thesis and publishing a plagiarized e-book for admission to a prestigious U.S. university.
Instead of applying for a search and seizure warrant, the police analyzed 11 documents obtained upon request from overseas academic societies and cleared her of obstruction of business charges on the grounds that the academic society to which her thesis was submitted had not conducted a review.
The charge of copyright infringement—accusing her of producing and selling an e-book based on plagiarized content—was dismissed with a "no right to prosecute" decision on the grounds that there was no complaint filed by the original author.
