1. At around 8:40 a.m. today (October 16), a fire broke out at a four-story metal parts coating factory located in Naedong, Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province. Fire authorities issued a Level 2 response and managed to bring the flames under control after two hours of firefighting operations. However, five firefighters sustained minor and major injuries during the extinguishing process, with one of them transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest. Two factory officials were also reported to have been injured. Based on the initial report that the fire started in the third-floor cleaning room, the police and fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire.
2. The police investigating the suspected preferential hiring allegations surrounding Yu Dam, an Incheon National University professor and daughter of former lawmaker Yoo Seong-min, have forwarded four individuals, including former lawmaker Yoo and Incheon National University President Lee In-jae, to the prosecution on charges of obstruction of business. The police also forwarded the university president and one Incheon National University professor to the prosecution with additional charges of violating the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act. The police have been investigating the accused individuals since receiving a complaint last November. While Professor Yu Dam, the subject of the allegations, underwent a single written questioning session, she was not booked as no criminal charges were confirmed. Following the police announcement, former lawmaker Yoo stated via social media, "My daughter's hiring process was fair and rightful, and this investigation is a politically motivated probe. We will reveal the truth and prove our innocence through the indictment and trial processes."
3. Plans by U.S. President Donald Trump to broadcast the execution by firing squad of a U.S. military base mass shooter have hit a roadblock. President Trump posted on social media that while the mass shooter will be executed by firing squad as scheduled, it will not be broadcast live. Although President Trump stated that he decided against it, the decision came immediately after the release of a joint poll by the Washington Post, ABC, and Ipsos showing that an overwhelming majority of roughly 80% of the U.S. public opposed a live broadcast, suggesting that President Trump felt pressured by the strong public opposition. Previously, President Trump approved the execution by firing squad earlier this month for Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who was sentenced to death after opening fire at a U.S. military base in Texas in 2009 and killing 13 people.
4. Tesla has showcased another vehicle once again, unveiling a flying sports car, the Roadster. Tesla demonstrated the "Roadster," equipped with gas thrusters, at its SpaceX test site in Texas, U.S. During the demonstration, the Roadster drove halfway up a circular track resembling a roller coaster, flipped upside down and used thrusters to land on the ground, and sprinted toward a line of five parked cars before leaping over them through the air and landing, creating movie-like scenes. CEO Elon Musk explained, "This car has attitude control thrusters and a rear main thruster, allowing it to fly like a rocket. Tesla and SpaceX engineers worked closely together."
