President Lee Jae-myung said on Thursday (October 15) that "extraordinary measures must be swiftly formulated with the resolve to declare war on violent crimes, such as relationship-based crimes committed by family members, romantic partners, or colleagues, and indiscriminate crimes targeting the general public."
Presiding over a meeting with senior secretaries at Cheong Wa Dae on this day, President Lee made the call, stating, "Public anxiety is running very high as heinous crimes, including casualties from relationship-based offenses and stabbing rampages, have occurred one after another recently."
President Lee emphasized, "Such crimes that threaten the lives of innocent citizens are a very serious issue that jeopardizes the safety of society as a whole," adding, "Furthermore, given that the victims are largely vulnerable individuals, such as women, more meticulous and extraordinary measures are necessary."
He continued, "We must closely examine whether there were any loopholes in existing policies by creating something like an interagency joint response body dedicated to this issue," instructing officials to "meticulously prepare tailored prevention measures by risk level and effective victim protection plans based on an assessment of conditions, including whether victim protection devices function properly and whether high-risk individuals, such as those wearing electronic monitoring devices, are managed appropriately."
He also added, "On-site response capabilities must be further strengthened to prepare for emergency situations. Actively pursue massive reinforcements in personnel, organization, and equipment," stressing, "All means available at the government level must be fully concentrated to properly establish a system for thorough crime prevention, rapid on-site response, and seamless victim protection and support."
