▲ The closing prices for the KOSPI and KOSDAQ are displayed at the dealing room of Hana Bank in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 15th, when both indexes plummeted amid reignited debates over the profitability of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
The KOSPI plummeted by more than 7% today (the 15th) as controversies surrounding the investment profitability of artificial intelligence (AI) resurfaced.
The KOSPI closed down 454.59 points, or 7.57%, from the previous session at 5,554.22.
Both the point drop and the percentage decline on this day marked the largest in about two and a half months since July 28 (732.09 points, -10.84%).
Having fallen for seven consecutive trading sessions from the 6th to this day, the KOSPI has crashed by a total of 1,449.52 points (21%) over this period.
Looking at today alone, the index started at 5,673.01, down 335.80 points (5.59%) from the previous session, and dropped as low as 5,450.81 (-9.29%) in the afternoon, briefly breaking below the 5,500 threshold.
However, it later recovered some of the losses to close while defending the 5,500 line.
Meanwhile, due to the sharp plunge in early trading, sell sidecars were sequentially triggered in both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets.
It has been about two and a half months since sell sidecars were triggered for both markets on the same day, last occurring on July 29.
Subsequently, as both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ indexes crashed by over 8%, consecutive circuit breakers were activated in both markets, temporarily halting trading for 20 minutes each.
This also marks the first time since July 29.
The KOSDAQ index plunged 63.06 points (7.65%) to close the session at 760.82.
