President Lee Jae-myung said on October 15, "Both the ruling and opposition parties share a unanimous view that the May 18 Democratization Movement and the Buma Democratic Uprising should be inscribed in the preamble of the Constitution," adding, "Now is the time to put this into practice through action, not words."
His remarks are drawing attention as they once again bring up calls to the political arena to begin discussions on constitutional amendment in earnest.
Chairing a meeting with senior secretaries and aides at Cheong Wa Dae a day ahead of the 47th anniversary of the Buma Democratic Uprising, President Lee said, "In the current situation of overcoming an insurrection, the Buma Democratic Uprising and the May 18 Democratization Movement hold even greater significance."
President Lee recalled, "Tomorrow marks the 47th anniversary of the Buma Democratic Uprising. The courage of the citizens of Busan and Masan, who resolutely stood up against the Yushin regime that suppressed democracy, human rights, and freedom of the press, was a key driving force that accelerated the collapse of fortress-like authoritarianism and military dictatorship."
He continued, "The Buma Democratic Uprising, which upheld the principle of popular sovereignty with their whole beings, is a proud history supporting the democratic Republic of Korea alongside the May 18 Democratization Movement," adding, "Our government of popular sovereignty was also able to be born upon this very foundation of democracy."
