Yemen's pro-Islamist Houthi rebels have claimed that they shot down a Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet belonging to the Royal Saudi Air Force.
Local time on the 15th, Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson for the Houthi rebels, stated via his Telegram channel, "A Typhoon fighter jet that violated the airspace of Saada Governorate in northern Yemen was directly hit by a surface-to-air missile and is at risk of crashing."
Spokesperson Saree also posted a video capturing a flash resembling an explosion of a flying object in the dark night sky, but the factual accuracy has not yet been verified.
Previously on September 16, the Houthi rebels claimed to have shot down a Saudi Air Force F-15 fighter jet with a surface-to-air missile over Marib Governorate in Yemen, releasing photos of fallen debris and related footage.
This marks the first time the Houthi rebels have shot down a Saudi military fighter jet since Saudi Arabia intervened in the Yemeni civil war in 2015.
In the early stages of the civil war, the Houthi rebels were at a unilateral disadvantage in air power compared to the Saudi military, but over the past decade or so, with support from Iran and the development of their own technology, they have recently come to possess notable missile, drone, and air defense capabilities.
