A group has been caught for promising compensation to local seniors, juniors, and others, collecting 32 burner accounts (daepo accounts), and providing them to a criminal organization operating an illegal gambling site.

The Gangwon Provincial Police Agency announced on October 14 that it has booked 12 members of a distribution ring, including a ringleader identified as A who masterminded the recruitment of burner accounts, and 22 account holders who handed over their accounts, without detention on charges of violating the Electronic Financial Transactions Act.

From last year until April of this year, the distribution ring led by A approached local seniors and juniors whom they knew, promising them about 1.5 million won per account to open new financial accounts.

Using this method, they handed over 32 burner accounts to an illegal gambling site operating organization.

Initiating an investigation based on a tip-off, the police apprehended a total of 34 individuals, including the members of the burner account distribution ring and the account holders, over a period of about six months by analyzing mobile phones and related accounts used in the crimes.

It was revealed that most of the suspects are 19 to 20 years old.

As a result of the investigation, it was found that A is already detained and imprisoned in connection with a similar case.

Kwak Byeong-woo, head of the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency, explained, "Trading illicit items such as financial accounts and mobile phones in exchange for money can be subject to punishment, and these can be abused as powerful criminal tools that destroy families and society."

He also urged, "If you are asked to trade burner items, firmly refuse or report it to the police."
