Hacking attacks that have recently struck the financial sector are spreading. Following a breach at MG Community Credit Cooperatives that leaked the personal information of some 400 customers, it has been raised that information of around 180 customers may have also been leaked at OK Savings Bank.

Here is a report by reporter Choi Seung-hun.

This is an apology posted on the homepage by the National Credit Federation of Korea under the name of its president.

It stated that customers' personal information was leaked and disclosed 12 categories of leaked items.

The leaked data includes names, phone numbers, addresses, encrypted resident registration numbers, account numbers, and even account balances.

MG Community Credit Cooperatives announced that it has sent text messages to the affected customers and will fully compensate for any damages incurred.

It was confirmed that hackers attacked a vulnerability in a web page used by mutual aid insurance customers, rather than the federation's main homepage, after 2 PM on October 10.

The National Credit Federation of Korea became aware of the leak on the afternoon of October 12, two days later.

The method is suspected to be similar to recent successive financial sector hacks that utilized external business web pages as hacking paths.

However, the IP address used in this hacking attack is known to be different from the 28 addresses confirmed to have been used in previous hacking attacks.

As MG Community Credit Cooperatives temporarily suspended its insurance app and web services to prevent further damage, some customers who did not receive advance notice expressed anxiety.

An attempt to attack the loan application web page was also detected at OK Savings Bank on October 12.

The bank blocked its information inquiry system and reported to the Financial Supervisory Service that personal information of 183 customers may have been leaked.

The bank stated that it views the incident as similar to recent financial sector hacks and is investigating with an external security firm to determine whether an actual information leak occurred.
